Meet Robert Goodwin of Pooler/Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Goodwin.

Hi Robert, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small farming community in western Kentucky with an interest in the arts; particularly music and have a B.A. in Communication Art with an emphasis in vocal music and technical theatre…but I’ve spent most of my adult life in the medical/surgical field. I have a B.S. degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and briefly worked as the Marketing Director for the former Mopper-Stapen Real Estate Co. in Savannah. Upon retiring from the surgical laser field in 2024 I wanted to re-enter the art world and decided to try watercolor and ink art for the first time; I find that this medium of art has the ability to capture color and shapes like no other. It’s satisfying to see colors blend and create movement both intentional and unintentional. While I love painting nature scenes, I don’t have a specific subject that I paint. My work ranges from the landscapes, to the fanciful and playful wildlife; it’s all about my feelings at the moment. I’m inspired by colors and shapes in nature.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to watercolor painting was a “by chance” opportunity to expand my knowledge of the art world. There is learning curve to watercolor, so I found I throw away as many paintings as I keep. Knowing that perfection isn’t always achievable, I’ve learned to live with the mistakes and embrace the possibility that the mistakes can sometimes be as beautiful as the intention.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Although my career was in the medical field, my creative profession was by chance. I think if anything, the accessibility of my art for people who are not collectors, and just want pieces of work they can admire for what it is…chosen art. Whether it’s an original piece of watercolor and ink, or one of my prints, my work speaks to each person in a different way. The variety of my subject matter sets me apart from other artists (i.e. landscape, cityscape, nature, abstract, etc).

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I encounter people from all over the US that say they’ve attempted some form of painting and sketching but have given up after a short period of time. I always advice/encourage them to go back to the beginning and try again…there is an artist in everyone waiting to get out; it just takes persistence and motivation to learn and go with each medium.
