Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Edwards.
Hi Sara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Here is my bio: Version 2.
Sara Edwards, CPM
Homebirth Midwife
Sara Edwards is a Certified Professional Midwife with over two decades of experience in the healthcare field. She began her career in 1999, working in a variety of clinical settings that laid a strong foundation for her work in pregnancy and birth. A native of New Jersey, Sara relocated to Bluffton, South Carolina in 2012 after spending 15 years in Maryland.
In December of 2012, she completed her first doula training, marking her introduction to physiologic, non-medicalized birth. Prior to midwifery, Sara worked for more than 10 years in a large Perinatology (high-risk obstetrics) practice and also served as a Certified Nursing Assistant on Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Newborn Nursery units. In 2013, she began working as a birth assistant with a small homebirth practice, where she was deeply inspired by the midwives she supported.
Motivated to pursue midwifery, Sara began her formal education in 2017 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Midwifery from the Midwives College of Utah. She has been in active midwifery practice for nearly four years and has attended the births of over 76 babies, providing individualized, relationship-based care to families throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.
In addition to her midwifery training, Sara is a Certified Level III Reiki Master-Healer and incorporates holistic relaxation techniques and comfort measures into her care when appropriate.
With her diverse background across both high-risk medical environments and out-of-hospital birth, Sara brings a balanced, knowledgeable, and deeply supportive approach to midwifery care. She believes birth is one of the most beautiful and intimate experiences in a woman’s life and considers it an honor to walk alongside families during this sacred transition
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve had a myriad of challenges including financial stability, being a single mother and the challenges of juggling the demands of midwifery school, working to support my children
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lowcountry Midwifery Services?
The Midwifery Model of Care
The Midwifery Model of Care is based on the fact that pregnancy, labor, and birth are normal, healthy life processes. This model gives women the option of a natural birth instead of an interventive and medicalized birth, and it offers a holistic approach to prenatal care and women’s health.
The Midwifery Model of Care includes:
Monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle;
Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support;
Minimizing technological interventions; and
Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention.
The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.
