Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Roehm.
Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Fixing the Boro began in the spring of 2017 as a small nonprofit group set to help pet owners find affordable spay/neuter and vetting options for their pets. Utilizing vouchers with local vets offices, we fundraised to offset discounted costs for community members. Soon after getting going, however, it was realized we would also need a rescue license, as MANY families were already experiencing the repercussions of accidental litters from not prior having their pets spayed/neutered.
In 2018, Fixing the Boro became a state licensed animal rescue, and we chugged on from there! Still, we did not feel like we were making enough of an impact. So- in May of 2020- we opened the doors to Statesboro’s first ever truly low-cost spay/neuter clinic- The SNIP Clinic.
Since opening, the clinic has altered over 8,000 dogs/cats/rabbits, and has adopted out more than 1,000 animals in 2020 and 2021 alone.
We work closely with multiple local animal shelters, both offering rescue assistance and helping them vet the animals in their care prior to adoption, and are proud to say that we now have 3 counties (Bulloch, Effingham, Candler) that are adopting out fully vetted animals that are also spayed/neutered thanks to their partnership with our clinic!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth, but thankfully, we all have four-wheel drive! Tough skin is a must in this line of work <passion>, but the goals we have set and our love of animals pushed us forward always! While the public is not always the nicest to us, and fundraising isn’t always as fruitful as we’d like (and need), we aren’t giving up, and likely never will. I will say that the friendships/partnerships we’ve made along this journey are invaluable, and even one stellar believer/encouraging friend in your corner beats 200 naysayers!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the President and Rescue Director of Fixing the Boro, and my job is anything but structured or ordinary! Fundraising, public relations, event planning, posting to social media, handling animal intakes/transfers/adoptions/returns, setting outside veterinary appointments for animals within our care, knowing when every animal in our care is due for monthly prevention, has a meet and greet for adoption, or has booster appointments are just a few of my daily hats worn!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Statesboro is a wonderful “little big town”! A few things that make our city unique is that it is a college town, meaning every semester new faces are coming and going! For foster and adoption purposes, this keeps our audience fresh and our assistance plenty! We have a large network of animal lovers here, and our donor relations are wonderful with family owned stores and shops. We are also, however, a long standing rural/agricultural community, meaning multiple outdoor/unaltered pets., and it has proven challenging to change the mindset of many families with a vast difference in opinion of proper pet ownership.
