Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Photo Club
Hi Savannah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Savannah Photo Club was founded in December of 2023 and it all started from a simple idea. Passion and community. Three passionate photographers got together and said let’s join all of our communities together and start something cool. After lots of conversation here we are today.
Joshua – November 2022 I walked into Starlandia on Bull Street on a date with my wife and we had one rule which was to pick something that would be fun and it had to be less than $5. We happened to pick a film camera and took some film photos and the rest is history. The photos were magical and we had to do that again.
We fell in love with the photos and started shooting more photos the very next day.
Randall – In 2018 I had a bunch of friends that were film photographers and I wanted to try it out for myself, so a friend of mine sold me my first camera. I fell in love so quickly with the process, but mostly because photography gave me a new way of looking and observing the world. As someone who struggles with ADHD and being present, taking photographs has become my way of being grounded and here in the moment.
Daniel – I started “professionally” shooting in 2010 when I was a sophomore in college. However my mother nurtured my initial interest in photography in middle school when she bought me a camera. It quickly became my favorite hobby and a wonderful way to connect with the world around me. I started with an interest in only documenting nature but eventually started shooting concerts, people and everything in between. I’ve had the privilege of shooting for a variety of different publications, festivals and brands throughout the years. I’ve really enjoyed continuing this journey in Savannah.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Joshua – Considering that photography isn’t my day job, I’ve had somewhat of a privileged route. I do my best to let photography be a creative outlet for me as opposed to a restrictive art form. I don’t have a defined route planned in my mind of what I want my photography to become in the future so I really enjoy the process of now and how my photography has become a part of who I am.
Randall – I mean, yes and no. With any passion, you are always hoping you are growing and pushing your own limits and boundaries. I’m incredibly proud of the work I’ve made but I always fear that what I have already done is already my best. It’s a kind of madness that you live with every day.
Daniel – There will always be obstacles as a photographer/artist. This could be in the form of a bad client, finding your style, creative blocks, identity, etc. The biggest struggle to me is finding purpose in what I’m shooting. Ultimately being a photographer comes with many internal and mental hurdles and I’ve gone through seasons of putting the camera down and eventually finding my way back to it organically.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One of the things we love most about the Savannah Photo Club is our ability to explore parts of the city that most people never see. We’re always on the lookout for hidden gems, from historic landmarks to secret gardens. And since we’re all about supporting the local community, we make it a point to try out different coffee shops whenever we’re out and about. It’s a great way to meet new people, discover new places, and give back to the city we love. We all use the SPC to increase our knowledge and passion for the craft.
Joshua – I did not have a traditional education or path to photography so I wouldn’t say I have a specialty. I have had the privilege to be able to try lots of different photographic styles. I’m a huge fan of creative projects and capturing natural emotion with people and trying to capture or display a specific message. Recently I’ve used photography to try and heal my inner child so lots of inspiration comes from my younger self. I’m most proud of my connection to the community. I love what we are creating and how the community supports us tremendously!
Randall – Sometimes I struggle with this question. I like to shoot a lot of things, really. Portraits, landscapes, fashion, everyday life. I like to think that all of my work contains a piece of myself. My proudest accomplishment is self publishing my photo book “Lower Country” last year. I had never done a long form project like that before and I am thrilled that I put in all of the hard work for it.
Daniel – I used to really try to pick a type of photography to specialize in but i’m too all over the place to narrow it down. People have told me they like authenticity in my work. Whether it’s shooting a party, live concert or portraits I try to document it all exactly as I see it. I’m really proud of everything I’ve shot over the years and cant see myself shooting anything specifically.
What were you like growing up?
Joshua – I was a nerd, but I also played a lot of sports! I grew up in Decatur GA and there a lot of skating and basketball. I was either at home playing Sonic on Sega Genesis or I was at a youth basketball camp with one of the churches I was going to as a child. I’m typically always in a friendly kid growing up in somewhat of a struggle realizing that all of us really are the same and just want a friend
Randall – I was laid back mostly but also was constantly on the move, being active, exploring my small town in Maryland. For the longest time skateboarding was my entire life, building shitty little ramps from wood we’d collect from scraps around the neighborhood. Then it was drumming and playing music/touring the states. I guess you could say I’ve just always been someone who can’t sit still for too long.
Daniel – I grew up in High Point, North Carolina. A smaller town which sparked a ton of curiosity in me that I still have to this day. I believe my personality has been the same for as long as I can remember. I don’t take anything too seriously and flow with what life throws at me.
