Today, we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Toomer.
Sierra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in the salon was my way of life; my dad, a barber, began cutting hair in our kitchen when I was just two years old. I vividly remember watching him work.
I also watched my aunts and my mom create styles that left everyone looking good. Initially, I wasn’t drawn to the idea of doing hair myself, but it became clear that it was my destiny. It’s where I was meant to be, following the path that God had laid out for me.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been quite a journey. I remember those days when I was juggling dropping off my son at daycare, attending school at Empire in Savannah, and then working late at a salon. I even recall sleeping at a gas station once because I was so exhausted.
Eventually, the long hours led me to quit Empire and start over with on-the-job training in Beaufort, South Carolina, at a salon to finish getting my license. Ms. Paulette was the owner, and I can’t thank her enough for helping me. It was tough, especially with a pregnancy thrown into the mix, but I never gave up. Despite the challenges, I pursued my passion for hair, turning it into a career. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in haircuts, hair extensions, lace installs, and promoting healthy hair. What I’m most proud of is my journey to success despite facing numerous challenges. From juggling school, work, and family responsibilities to overcoming setbacks and starting over, I’ve always remained dedicated to my craft. What sets me apart from others is my versatility as an all-around stylist.
It’s not just about what I can do, but it’s a part of who I am. I prioritize client satisfaction and ensuring they leave feeling their best. Building strong relationships is key to me, and my clients appreciate the care and attention I provide. Cherishing these connections is what sets my service apart, and it’s something my clients truly value.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Don’t be discouraged by setbacks or challenges along the way. Stay resilient, stay focused on your goals, and believe in yourself and your abilities.
Keep perfecting your craft, remain teachable, and keep learning. By continuously perfecting your craft and staying curious, you’ll not only stay relevant but also elevate yourself in the game.
