Meet Tanvi Gupta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanvi Gupta.

Hi Tanvi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started really young, I’d always wanted my artwork to look different from everyone in art class at school. It didn’t matter if my drawing wasn’t great. As long as it was colored in well and every mistake was made to look intentional, I had outdone myself. It wasn’t until my teen years that I questioned what I do and why I do it that way. I struggled with those questions until I came across pour-painting in 2020. I spent the 1st half of the year wanting to explore the style and studying it, only to decide it was were wasteful and convince myself I would not enjoy it.

A few months later, I moved houses and I had a garage space that I deemed my ‘art space’. I bit the bullet and got a few canvas boards, some paint, and did my first ever spill.

The very first one felt a bit like coming home. It wasn’t perfect, I hadn’t planned it either. The paint did a bit of its own thing on the canvas and the end result was UNIQUE. That’s when I knew I wanted to do more. The garage since has become a full-fledged studio space with art supplies overflowing and the racks full of experimental pieces done over the last year.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth, but it hasn’t been hard either. I spent a few years being lost and those were challenging as I didn’t make art. I had ideas but couldn’t bring myself to flesh them out or would start and leave them unfinished. Since I started spill painting it has been automatic yet authentic in a way. If I am not creating, I am wasting; whether it’s supplies or potential. The act of setting up and packing away has always seemed like a dissuading roadblock.

Over the years it has become easier to start but I still dabble with spells of no inspiration. Having a dedicated space where I can leave things out and start from wherever I left helps. It’s almost essential to my current practice.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create 8-inch acrylic pour painting triptychs currently. Each color palette is inspired by the colors I see around me. From holidays in Australia or on various sightseeing around my neighborhood. Some are even inspired by the food I eat, my family & I are obsessed with food. I’m still experimenting with my paintings and which direction I’d like to take with them. I am most proud of my current consistency and willingness to show up and create regularly. I believe my colour combinations set me apart currently but there’s a lot more in store where that comes from!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I think honestly answering the question “What do you like doing / What’s your thing” is a great conversation starter with anyone. I haven’t gone out of my way to network within the art community but I make an effort to communicate with peers whose work I admire. Even if it starts small with commenting on their work or messaging them. Talking about my work within family, friend & acquaintance groups is a good start.

I met my first mentor so-to-speak through my parents, I’m yet in the search for one I’m willing to look up to.

I’m currently working on a website, I’m aware that really helps with legitimizing your practice. Until then I make sales from Instagram/Emails & I think it works for a lot of small business creators to begin with.
