Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Ibrahim.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started in Caracas, Venezuela, the place I was born and raised. Since little I was passionate about taking photos, capturing moments, experiences, and memories. Little did I know back in my hometown that photography or design wasn’t a career that had much respect such as engineering or accounting. Looking for a place that represents what I wanted I stumbled upon SCAD and that’s where my journey began. I wanted to study something that incorporates photography and design, so I lean towards Advertising specifically Art Direction. As an Art director, I need to be able to design as a graphic designer, have an eye for photography since I’ll be arranging and brainstorming photoshoots, and also have the creativity to think of innovative campaigns. Fast forward, 4 years later I graduated from SCAD with a BFA in Advertising and two minors, one in Graphic Design and the other in Photography. I can say that I’m pretty lucky to be able to have a profession that I love, and mostly since my hobby is taking photos everywhere I go. After working for some agencies in New York, I decided to create my own brand that’s called VIBRAHC. The name VIBRAHC comes from all my names added together. V stands for Veronica, IBRAH stands for Ibrahim and C stands for Canas which is my second last name. I wanted to create something that had my own point of view, my own feeling, and creativity. A place where I can inspire people and be inspired by them. I discovered that my passion for photography is seeing and showcasing things with geometric shapes and discovering color in each photo. I wanted to portray and represent that each photo has a moment, and each moment tells a story. If you go to my Instagram page (@vibrahc) I also use the color of each photo to color code the Instagram creating an aesthetic feeling when looking at it. As I mentioned in my personal webpage (www.vibrahc.com) it’s not only a photo, is a personal perspective of how I perceive the world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All roads have struggles, and if it doesn’t have struggles, then you are not on the right road. People say you can never reach the sky without any lumps on the road because it makes you gain experience and I believe that’s true. Building a brand from scratch takes a lot of time, determination, and patience. For me, it has been juggling with work 9 to 5 and then taking my personal time to create what I love, editing photos, taking photos, and trying to put my name out there. Sometimes the biggest struggle I have is my own thoughts and questions that rise up, for example ” Am I really good or am I just another photographer with pretty pictures? Am I doing it right? Will people understand what I’m trying to convey as an artist? And is rough trying to put those questions aside and continue to do what you love. All I can say is “If you really love what you do, then there is no better feeling than putting those questions aside and continuing with the best attitude and self-confidence.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was the kid that was always different. I’m lefty and also gay therefore I was always different from the rest of the girls in my school. I studied at a catholic school that was only for girls so the competition between us was very aggressive and psychologically demanding. I remember whenever there was an artistic task I was left aside cause they only had scissors for right-hand people and if I tried to cut with those scissors, then I will break the paper. Also, back in the day we needed to take notes in our notebooks with our own handwriting, tablets didn’t exist at that moment, and it was always harsh for me to write correctly since the pen always washed my notes, so I ended up with a bunch of ink on my notebook. To this day I remember all those things but wait it wasn’t all bad all the time I had a bunch of good memories that build me up to become what I am today! As I mentioned earlier, experiences good or bad are the ones that build your character, and yes, thanks to always being different I really connected with myself and started to look into the art field and a way to express myself to this day on. I still believe I’m different in a good way! Each artist has their own way to be, and this is mine! Pushing myself harder each day to achieve what I want!
