Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Lucy.
Hi Angela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
At Colgate University, I had a roommate who was always trying to get me to have a Tarot Card Reading. So, when I did my semester abroad in London, I did! I was amazed by the accuracy and insight it gave me.
When I later moved to New York, I continued to have readings. One day, I looked at the cards and started wondering what all the symbols and images were and where they originated. So, having been an English Literature major, I bought a Tarot deck and a book, Eileen Connelly’s “Tarot for the Apprentice”, and just dug in and taught myself to read.
After that, I slowly started to read for myself and other people. I’ve had other businesses and occupations. I owned a temporary personnel service for 26 years, managed a rock band, worked for a jazz booking agent, was a tour guide on New York’s double-decker busses, etc. But I always also read the Tarot on the side.
Once I closed my temporary personnel service, I decided to devote myself to Tarot Card Reading full time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Actually, once I started to devote all my time to promoting myself as a Tarot Card Reader full time, it became my full-time occupation pretty quickly.
I read part-time at 2 local metaphysical bookshops: Aum Shanti Bookshop and Namaste Bookshop for years. That helped me build up my clientele. I also read part-time on the online call-in service, Keen, for 11 years before I became a full-time Tarot Reader.
It was just a matter of constantly posting online, handing out business cards, word of mouth, etc. At first, I would even go into Union Square Park, which is 1/2 block from my apartment, and just go up to people and ask if they wanted a Tarot Card Reading. I still have some of those customers 10 years later!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m most proud of the fact that I really help people with my Tarot Readings.
When I get positive feedback or a review from a customer saying they were helped or that whatever I had predicted came true (even though they doubted it during the reading!) I feel I’ve done my job.
I also like doing more high-profile readings on camera. I’ve read for Snooki and J-Wow of “Jersey Shore” for MTV, been on the morning show, “Dr. & The Diva” for their Halloween episode,
I’ve worked with several comedians, too! I don’t know why that happens! I’ve done an episode of “Still Alive in New York City” with Sam Morrill, HBO’s “Two Point Lead” with Yannis Pappas, read for Tori Piskin’s dog at a Dog Birthday Party on a rooftop in Manhattan, and done several live stand up shows at QED (a club in Queens, New York) with Brittany Brave.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Hmmm… I guess patience and resilience. During the first days of the pandemic, I just powered through. I did some online ZOOM classes, teaching people about the Tarot. Continued to do Tarot readings by phone, Skype, FaceTime, or Zoom for people.
I even did Tarot Reading Parties by Zoom. And I continue to do them! So, in a way, it helped me to expand into new areas.
I started and am still in the process of doing a video series of 22 (the number of Major Arcana cards in the Tarot deck) short, 1-minute Tarot lessons that are really a bit more fun, but also informative, called “Tarot in a New York Minute”. You can find them on my YouTube Channel.
