Rising Stars: Meet Brett and Crystal Lay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett and Crystal Lay.

Hi Brett and Crystal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We got started when we first visited Savannah. We’re both from North Carolina, and were pursuing Crystal’s favorite band. They didn’t announce a tour date in our local city at the time (Charlotte), but were playing a date at the Civic Center in Savannah. In order to see them, we booked a stay and came to visit the area. Once we got here we fell in love with the architecture and feel of this city stuck in time. The breathtaking trees covered in Spanish moss, the larger than life gothic architecture, and the southern hospitality. It felt like we found our home.

We spent the next year or so working to relocate here.

We started the Scary Savannah and Beyond podcast as a project for us to do together. Brett is a musician and played with local bands in the Savannah and Tybee area. During that time, he got to know quite a few of the local musicians and also other interesting Savannah locals. We took some ghost tours and found out more about how Savannah is known as the most haunted city in America.

We decided to take our love of stories (especially ghost ones), and proceeded to create our own project to have an outlet to share our love of storytelling with the world. This was where the Scary Savannah and Beyond podcast was born.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The main struggle was learning how to effectively create and distribute our show. Crystal is a huge fan of true crime stories and follows several other podcasters. Brett contacted that podcast to see if the creator would offer any advice on some of these issues, and he graciously contacted him and gave us some good pointers in the direction to proceed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our podcast is what sets us apart. There are many storytellers in Savannah, but not many podcasters (that we know of). Also, when creating our show, we decided to focus on a large breadth of potential story topics (not just Savannah), so we have a large pool of resources to pull from for our show.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Our favorite books so far are Haunted Savannah by James Caskey and Historic Haunts of Savannah by Linda Sickler and Michael Harris. As far as podcasts go, Crystal loves True Crime All The Time, True Crime Guys, My Favorite Murder, and True Crime All The Time Unsolved. Brett enjoys The No Sleep Podcast, The Grey Rooms Podcast, and Lore by Aaron Mahnke, to name a few.
