Rising Stars: Meet ConverSWations Podcast of Broughton Street and all over Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to ConverSWations Podcast.

Hello ConverSWations Podcast, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Over 10 years ago, Pat and Charles met while attending a holiday party put on by the hospital where their wives (aka The Star Wives) met and became close friends. As Pat & Charles sat across from each other, small talk ensued and after a couple of Star Wars references were dropped by Pat, they became fast friends (despite Charles dropping a few Star Trek references).

Fast forward to 2019, and once again, the Star Wives are pivotal in spurring our nascent podcasting career by “encouraging” us to record our incessant Star Wars talk “over there” (i.e., away from them). We launched our bi-weekly show in February 2019, and while most not-for-profit podcasts end before episode 20, we passed 100 episodes a few months ago! To no surprise to us, the every-so-often episodes where the Star Wives join us in recording of their reviews of the Star Wars movies are among our most popular!

One of the most important aspects of what this little podcast endeavor has brought us is networking. Aside from our amazing membership in the Red 5 Network (bio.link/red5), we are always focused on the dozens of small comics & collectibles businesses everywhere we visit. We get their social accounts and promote them because just like our show, it’s tough to make it all alone. Small businesses are the lifeblood of our great country, and shops like Nerdheim Comics, Planet Fun & Echo Base Comics & Collectibles in Savannah are our go-to shops when we visit Charles’ daughter who is attending SCAD.

That’s our story! Podcasting about Star Wars and supporting local businesses.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It honestly has been a blast! When we launched the show, it was about us having a blast talking Star Wars. We didn’t have any expectations to make money with the podcast, but we have Star Wars-themed commercials we create and collaborate on and insert them into the episodes as a break. The spots are not only some of our most popular content, they are a great way to network within the Star Wars podcast community! The only “struggle” was gaining an audience in a very crowded space, but being founding members of the Red 5 Network has greatly helped with that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are most proud of the found family we have met as a result of our podcast. It truly is a blessing! We are known for being funny, and most listeners would tell you that they love the balance of laughter & deep Star Wars knowledge each of our episodes brings. We certainly have fun with each topic, and that comes out in the end.

What we feel sets us apart is fun we have with the tangible aspects of our fandom; we build homemade cosplays of our favorite characters (and show them off at conventions). We are huge fans of action figures, so we’ve spent countless hours recreating scenes and setting up scenarios, and creating Luke on a Ledge – a riff on the Elf on the Shelf. We are also 3D print enthusiasts, and we’ve designed & printed props for our cosplay, elements for our action figure sets & most importantly – dozens & dozens of highly coveted, hand assembled & painted giveaways for our friends & fans. We also conceive, create and sell original Star Wars fan art on t-shirts in our Etsy shop.

What do you think about luck?
In our experience, there’s no such thing as ‘luck.’

But seriously, it was foretold that Pat & Charles would meet.

But seriously, SERIOUS… this entire podcast experience has been so smooth and rewarding; it was meant to be!
