Today we’d like to introduce you to David and Diana Virgil.
Hi David and Diana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
David: Photography started as a hobby; for it was something I did for fun as a teenager. Eventually, I put the camera down after I went to college. I decided to pick up a camera again about 5 years ago after an old teammate of mine, Larry Walker of Skywalker Photography, offered to give me one of his first cameras. A few months after that, I started to expand my education with a few photography courses and practiced by shooting with friends and family.
Diana: I have always loved photographs since a little girl. My sister had this big box of photos that she kept in her house. Anytime someone needed a photo for an event, we knew we could find one in her box. It was not until grad school that I really took an interest in the art of photography. After being David’s model as he worked on his craft, I too, took photography courses and expanded my education in learning more. This also sparked my interest in the wedding industry for I have always loved the planning and decor of weddings. In addition, my photography interest is weddings simply because I am able to capture the joining of two lives together in such a beautiful way for years to come.
Birth of Destiny’s Creations Photography: We both knew we wanted kids when we got married; however, we did not imagine having a hard time trying to conceive. Once year one hit, and we were still were unsuccessful in conceiving, we sought medical help. At that time, Diana was diagnosed with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and later endometriosis. Due to both of these, our doctors recommended fertility treatments; which can be very costly.
Prior to starting our business, we had almost given up hope due to the money required. During our time in college, we always discussed possibly starting a photography business but did not feel that the time was right due to being newlyweds, starting our careers, and more. It was not until we went through a series of events from suffering our first miscarriage, being told we would never conceive naturally again, learning about our new medical diagnosis from multiple doctors, undergoing fertility treatments/surgery, and several other losses, that now was the time to create Destiny’s Creations.
Therefore, in 2018, we decided to open Destiny’s Creations to help bring awareness to infertility and to aid in the cost of conceiving a child through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The name Destiny was chosen as the name that we would have given our firstborn. Creations was added because we felt that each time we created memories for others, we would be honoring Destiny. We believe that her not being here allowed for us to get to this point; resulting in why we created the business in her name. Each client we encounter turns into family because they will forever be a part of our journey in conceiving a child through IVF. Not only are we on a journey to have our first child, but we’re able to share our story with others. Once our blessing comes along, we plan to have a photo wall of everyone that we’ve had the pleasure of working with throughout our journey so that we can tell our child the story of everyone that helped them to be here. If it was not for beginning Destiny’s Creations, we both would not have been able to begin the healing process and acceptance of everything that has occurred throughout the years.
What once was a hobby turned into a life-changing experience for both of us. We now have our beautiful, healthy daughter Brooklyn, who just turned one year old as of this interview. We’re blessed to say that we didn’t even have to go the IVF route to conceive her. Now, our goal is to use our story to inspire others, capture memories that others will cherish for a lifetime, and build a college fund for Brooklyn.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is never an easy task. There were many days where one may become discouraged, frustrated, and more. However, our purpose kept us grounded throughout the process. We remember beginning and trying to secure clients. Not being from the Savannah area made it tough to make connections establish ourselves amongst those that had been doing it long that we had. Luckily, Diana is very business-minded and reached out to various marketing platforms to advertise. This helped tremendously. In the process, we were able to make connections with people like Savannah’s own Charisse Bruin of Charisse Styles. We were able to form a team that helps with coverage throughout the Southeast of the United States.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
