Rising Stars: Meet Gia Dragoi of Chicago

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gia Dragoi.

Hi Gia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into photography started over 20 years ago with a simple obsession for capturing real, unscripted moments. I eventually founded Gia Photos because I wanted to move away from stiff, “fake-smile” poses and instead focus on the genuine energy that makes every couple unique. After documenting more than 600 weddings across Chicago—and having been a bride myself—I’ve learned that my most important job isn’t just taking photos; it’s being a calming presence who helps even the most camera-shy couples feel totally at ease. Today, I’m just as passionate as when I started, blending a fly-on-the-wall approach with creative portraiture to make sure those “butterfly moments” are preserved for a lifetime.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly paved road, but the bumps are what made the journey worth it. After graduating from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, I had to navigate the massive challenge of relocating my entire life and budding career from the sunny, tropical vibes of Florida to the fast-paced, urban energy of Chicago.

Starting a business from scratch in a new city meant building a reputation where I didn’t have one, learning to master the unpredictable “Windy City” lighting, and finding my footing in a highly competitive market. There were moments of doubt and the typical “starving artist” hurdles, but those early struggles taught me how to be more than just a photographer—they taught me how to be a resilient business owner. Every missed shot in the beginning or difficult lighting situation in a dark Chicago cathedral became a lesson that helped me develop the calm, expert approach I bring to my weddings today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in wedding and engagement photography, but I also love capturing family portraits and surprise proposals across Chicago’s most iconic locations. I’m known for a style that acts as a silent narrator—a mix of photojournalism and creative portraiture that favors real, unscripted moments over stiff, fake smiles. Whether it’s an intimate session at North Avenue Beach or a grand celebration at the Drake Hotel, my goal is to document the raw beauty of your story as it unfolds.

I am incredibly proud to have been recognized by the US Commerce Association as one of Chicago’s Best Wedding Photographers for many years running. Beyond the awards, I’m proud of the reputation I’ve built with over 600 weddings under my belt, helping hundreds of couples feel comfortable in front of the lens.

What sets me apart is the heart and personal experience I bring to every shoot. Having been a bride myself, I truly understand the planning stress and the high stakes of the day. I don’t just show up to take pictures; I act as a partner to my couples—offering location advice, handling logistical hiccups with a “fly-on-the-wall” approach, and ensuring that even the most camera-shy people feel natural. I also make it a point to be the first one there, living by the rule that “if you can’t be on time, be early,” so you never have to worry about your photographer on your big day.

Any big plans?
Looking ahead, I’m really focused on finding new, modern ways to connect with couples and serve as a resource for the local wedding community. One of my biggest projects for the upcoming 2026 and 2027 seasons is expanding my digital presence—specifically on platforms like Reddit—to reach brides and grooms where they are actually hanging out and asking for advice.

On the technical side, I’m always evolving my gear and my “fly-on-the-wall” techniques to ensure that as wedding trends change, my high-resolution storytelling remains timeless. I’m already booking well into next year and the year after, and I’m genuinely excited to see the unique stories and creative visions the new season of couples will bring to the table!
