Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Knight
Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Element Clay Studio in 2007 as a group ceramics studio and gallery in Asheville, and it quickly turned into my personal brand within the first year. I built a healthy wholesale and retail presence and put my roots down in the River Arts District before moving to Savannah in 2016. I really wanted to slow down the pace and work from home and I found the perfect little bungalow, nestled just next to Bonaventure Cemetery with a studio building that suited my needs. My business has seen many seasons, but this has by far been my favorite, I am a one woman show by choice and wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think the biggest struggle has been carving out my own path and gaining the confidence to run my business in a way that’s true to me. I felt a ton of pressure to scale up and do more production for many years, and when I finally broke myself free from that thinking and that business model, I found much more peace and fulfillment in my life and in my creative work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in organic modern ceramic wall art and tabletop pieces. My most popular work are my porcelain wall tiles, which I use to create large installations. I have a minimal, less is more approach to my work, and my textured wall sculptures are the epitomy of that – I was able to isolate organic textures and make them into something completely different in a very simple and refined way. I love them.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The industry is always changing, I am interested to see what happens to the traditional path of the gallery artist as more and more of us are self represented . I think we are turning the art world upside down and its pretty exciting.
