Today we’d like to introduce you to Kita and Sally of the Homicide Worldwide Podcast.
Hi Kita and Sally, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Sally and I have been friends since the dawn of time – or at least the dawn of the millennia… we met in a class for entrepreneurs and were fast friends. We bonded over sarcasm and when I heard her Australian accent, well, I was toast. I was hooked on her every word, and she liked my American-ness.
In 2006, Sally moved to Oregon and left me here in Southern, CA. We have kept in close touch this whole time and remained with each other’s ride or die. So, when the idea of starting a podcast came about during my monster of a commute, years ago, I knew it had to be Sally to do this with.
The idea was a pipe dream for a very long time because time was always a factor for each of us and so this floated around for several years before the time was right. Ironically, that was during COVID because we finally had nothing but, time.
In the before times, when Homicide Worldwide was but an unnamed twinkle in our eyes… the blueprint was purely selfish – my commute made me need a reason to keep going with the grind of gas, honk, and brake… that’s where the idea of a podcast that was long enough to get you to work and home came in. One where when you get to work, you either want to wear headphones to finish it or, you have something to look forward to for your ride home.
And so, as I said when the world shutdown in 2020, the time was finally right to start focusing on this – and Homicide Worldwide Podcast was born. We began recording episodes in September 2020. We had 10 ready to go at the start of 2021 and have been releasing a weekly episode since then.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Each episode has had its own set of challenges and we have done many, many re-records and even scrapped a few episodes where we felt the quality of the content just wasn’t where we wanted it to be. Thank God, we have Martin, our amazing, patient, and extremely devoted Editor and Producer.
At the start, none of us knew what we were doing because none of us come from a media background… We learned all of this together and many times, on the fly. In hindsight, it is pure gold entertainment to think back on us running around like chickens with our heads cut off. We are still learning every week – and we will be learning for a long time, though slightly less chicken-like!
One big challenge is that we do not live in the same state. Sally is in Oregon and Martin and I, in California and so we have used Zoom as our primary way of recording. It has honestly been a god-send actually to have the tools to pull this off but being so far away is definitely not without its challenges.
I would say that the largest obstacle now is that as things are beginning to go back to some semblance of normalcy with work, time is again a factor – with that said, however, we have put our souls into this over the last 10 months and Homicide Worldwide is a huge priority. We are committed to making this work however we can and have lots of future plans as it continues to grow!
To be totally honest – at this point in time, marketing so we can get it in front of an audience, is the biggest hurdle!!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Homicide Worldwide Podcast is a weekly podcast that is hosted by Kita and Sally, two old friends with a shared interest in true crime. We aren’t a comedy podcast but we aren’t so serious all the time either. We specialize in the known as well as the not-so-well-known murder cases from around the world.
We have become known for balancing the heaviness of the crimes we discuss with some humor when we can. We love to go deep on the research and with the more notorious cases, we try to extrapolate something new for the listeners, that they may have not heard before. If we are not able to do that, we like to zoom out and take a wider perspective based on the virtue of hindsight.
We came into the podcast community with absolutely no experience or presence whatsoever. Homicide Worldwide was an idea that had floated around for several years. When COVID happened and we were all at home we decided to give it a shot! We had absolutely no clue in the beginning, of how to record, what we needed for quality audio or how to edit an episode. We tried three times to get the first episode exactly right because the first two we didn’t know how to fix some things.
We are very proud of where we came from to where we are now. We have seen the growth that has happened over the last year and despite all the challenges of not knowing what we were doing, we have close to 10,000 downloads at 10 months in and a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts.
Kita and Sally aim with every episode we release, to ensure that we remain respectful at all times and we make it a top priority to never forget that the people we are talking about were living, breathing beings with feelings and lives and they mattered. While we do discuss the details around what happened to them, we always keep this in mind.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
What we look like!
We intentionally take a measured approach with what we want our listeners to know about us because Homicide Worldwide isn’t about it. For the most part, we choose to keep our personal lives pretty private and anything that we do share in an episode is what we are comfortable sharing.
