Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Bailey.
Hi Liz, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi! I am Liz, a Charleston native and I actually started my esthetics journey while living abroad in Costa Rica or at least the Idea. I wanted a job that I could pick up and take anywhere and it be my own. I was surrounded by people working in hospitality, tourism, and traveling massage therapist looking for an alternative lifestyle. I never considered myself to be like the rest and entrepreneurship within the esthetics industry ( beauty industry) has lead me on a path that I can stand out as much or as little as I want and be a creative while raising a family all on my own time! Spray tanning is an art and waxing is a skill set I mastered while working at a Brazilian waxing spa for many years after attending and getting my License through school at Trident Technical College 2012(in Charleston.) A lot of people don’t know that yes just doing spray tanning and beauty services alone and having just a “Niche” can make you quite a good life on a somewhat flexible schedule besides some crazy busy holidays while it’s a super positive and Uplifting career choice to me.
It’s not work, it’s a passion and a journey in providing self care and a piece of value to your local community . I pride myself on my 10 years of being a licensed esthetician going on 5 years as a business owner in the town I was born in a raised right in the heart of downtown. I really put an effort into learning and keeping up with all the latest of the industry as far as trainings, products & Conferences go. The sunless tanning industry has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry as skin cancer cases rise. The public is now more educated on safe sunless tanning and not using UV tanning beds, and seeing the effects on there skin aging from the sun.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Owning a business and working on the public is never an easy road. However my past work experience prepared me well. I definitely learned to slow down and focus on quality over quantity over the years and really value my time. It took a couple health set backs to realize this. You learn and grow that’s what’s beautiful about entrepreneurship and really focusing on your main skill sets or “ niche” showing and marketing what you have to offer and just fine tuning this in your local community through word of mouth and fellow beauty leaders is what it all about, also personal skills and how to really talk to your client in a more personal way on what they have going on that there coming to you for your specialty! Reaching out to the community and doing events was always a nerve-wracking experience for me but the more you do it the easier it gets.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I own a small fast-growing Sunless tanning and waxing studio specializing in Brazilian Waxing named Bikini Bronze Charleston, formerly known as Bikini and Bronze by Liz. I am a 1:1 service provider and licensed esthetician, who most recently added an assistant to help with demands. BBC Specializes in body waxing hair removal hence the bikini and bronzy beautiful sunless tans with a niche for Destination Bridal tannings, small groups, special event or just pick me up self care services!
A lot of women and men come to me saying “ I don’t want to be orange” “ you know that episode on friends or “is this going to be like the 40 yr old virgin “ (for waxing) I will say there are prep to follow to avoid this and sometimes it takes a trial before you see what looks best on you and get it use to the instant color. The industry has come along way with better solutions today for all skin tones. Prep and Post care is at upmost important for having the best long lasting color.
The time is what I value and because I can customize colors to your skin type & tone makes for a better experience. I am not a “whose next” mindset within my business. I really take my time with each person.. Client connection is my ultimate specialty and I think that’s what keeps me unique, small and special.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I would love to spray tan to an actual celebrity. I’ve had my run-ins with a few local talents and models that have moved on to be known but oh I’d love to follow in the footsteps of some of my co-tan spray tan artist out there and receive I don’t know say Cardi B, JLo, Gisele, or any model, GOALS!! In reality though we are all just people, in search some self care.
I guess going back to living abroad in Costa Rica, surfing in Central America. Starting a family there and then moving back to Charleston, I feel I brought some of the jungle back. I am low vibe relaxed boss babe but energetic and fun person and it shows in my work and studio I love and you’ll notice. To talk all things travel, surf, adventuring, along with tanning and waxing. I do two of the most “scariest” palm sweating services in the industry, Brazilian waxing (ouch) and what most think “Oompa” tans but don’t worry, those aren’t so Loompa!
Know your worth, practice self care for you! Value your time and don’t watch YouTube tutorials before coming for a service. Always do your research, read reviews and look for independent small business for your services if your out of the Charleston area. Keep it smooth and bronze up! The beach is waiting!
