Rising Stars: Meet Lyric Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyric Gonzalez.

Lyric Gonzalez

Hi Lyric, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in the film world began during my high school years at Ballard High School in Seattle, WA. There, I immersed myself in the Digital Filmmaking Program for three years, where I honed my skills and passion for storytelling through film. I gained recognition at film festivals such as NWHSFF & NFFTY and interned with the Seattle School District’s Media Center.

After graduating in 2016, I moved to San Antonio, Texas, where I pursued an Associate’s Degree at Northwest Vista College. During this time, I also worked as a Lead Projectionist at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Park North location, gaining practical experience in film exhibitions and furthering my understanding of cinema. While in San Antonio, I engaged with various aspects of the local creative scene, including contributing to content creation for small businesses. These experiences broadened my perspective and strengthened my connection to the film and music industries.

I am a senior film & television student at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where I continue refining my skills as a screenwriter, producer, and director. My ambition is to bring captivating stories to life through the art of cinema, and I am eagerly seeking collaborations with like-minded individuals who share a deep passion for storytelling and creativity. Each step of my journey has contributed to my growth as a filmmaker, and I look forward to the projects and collaborations that lie ahead.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While my journey has been fulfilling and rewarding, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Transitioning from high school to college and relocating to a new city presented its share of adjustments and uncertainties. Balancing academics with work and creative endeavors required careful time management and perseverance. One of the significant challenges I faced was navigating the complexities of the film industry and building a network from scratch in a new city. Establishing myself as a filmmaker and gaining industry experience took time and persistence.

Additionally, managing the demands of coursework alongside professional commitments demanded resilience and adaptability. Financial constraints were another hurdle, as pursuing education and gaining industry experience often involved financial investments. Striking a balance between pursuing my passion and managing practical considerations was a continuous challenge. Despite these obstacles, each challenge offered valuable lessons and opportunities for growth. Despite setbacks, I’ve learned the importance of resilience, flexibility, and dedication to my craft. Each hurdle has ultimately strengthened my resolve and deepened my commitment to my aspirations in the film industry.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in producing and have overseen the development and execution of over 20 projects during my three years at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). This hands-on experience has deepened my understanding of production logistics, budgeting, scheduling, and team coordination. One of my proudest achievements is co-founding Owl House Productions with my creative partner and best friend, Jackson Wise. This production company represents our shared vision and commitment to innovative storytelling. We aim to produce compelling and impactful content that challenges conventions and resonates with audiences.

Currently, I’m in the exciting phase of completing my undergraduate thesis film titled “Shit Fit.” As this project’s writer, director, and producer, I’ve poured my creative energy into crafting a compelling coming-of-age story that addresses themes close to my heart and explores the DC Hardcore Punk scene in the early 80s. Completing “Shit Fit” is a significant milestone for me, representing the culmination of my academic journey at SCAD and my growth as a filmmaker. I’m eager to share this project with audiences and continue pushing boundaries in storytelling beyond graduation. This venture with Owl House Productions signifies a new chapter in my filmmaking career, and I’m excited to explore new opportunities and challenges alongside my creative partner.

What do you think about happiness?
What makes me truly happy is the ability to bring together passionate individuals to collaborate on film projects. Creating an environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and inspired is incredibly fulfilling. I strive to foster a sense of camaraderie and creativity on set, where we work towards a shared artistic vision, have fun, and learn from each other’s expertise. The joy comes from seeing talented individuals come together, each contributing their unique skills and perspectives to bring a story to life. Building these connections and creating memorable experiences during production is what drives me as a filmmaker. My goal for every film set is to make it my new favorite experience by cultivating a positive and supportive atmosphere where creativity can flourish.
