Rising Stars: Meet Maggy Davis of Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggy Davis.

Maggy Davis

Hi Maggy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in downtown Baltimore, MD. My mother ran a catering and floral business while I was a kid and my father has been a construction coordinator for film and television for over 30 years. They always encouraged my sibling and I to be creative as children; we went to art workshops on weekends, we made our own costumes and we always sent out handmade presents during the holidays. I eventually attended the Baltimore School for the Arts for high school, I studied theater production, where I found a love for costume design. After high school I deferred from the Savannah College of Art and Design to work on ‘House of Cards’ with my dad. I enjoyed the experience, but decided to attend SCAD in 2016. I loved studying art in college so much I couldn’t decide on one major, for the first 2 years I went from fashion design to accessories to fibers. During covid while all the studios were closed and classes were moved to online I struggled with finding a creative outlet for a while, but the one thing that helped me was sketch booking and painting. I eventually graduated with a BFA in fibers. Since college I have continued to practice painting and sell vintage clothing. Although I am still pursuing a career in textile design I have found great joy in painting and hope to continue it no matter what career path I choose.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Besides covid, creative burn out is the hardest thing for me as an artist. I often have to take breaks and find other things to keep me from loosing creative drive, the best thing for me is to get out into nature and new places to find inspiration. Savannah is one of the most inspiring cities I have lived, not to mention the amazing community of artists.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Since deciding to pursue painting as a possible career I have hosted painting workshops at Dream House Studio, private classes and commissioned private works for clients like Babe Cave Panama City! Currently I’m planning my first art show as well as small collection that will be sold as prints in a shop in Maine. I am most proud of my commissioned works, they were a totally new experience and it took a lot of time and devotion. It meant the world to create work that is meant to be displayed and that someone trusted me to create such pieces. I paint using only the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and white, this means every color in my work I have to create by mixing to be exactly right. I think this technique and my own personal style has given my work a great sense of personality and charm.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I owe my creativity to my parents and cant thank them enough for all the opportunities they made possible for me, especially making it possible for me to attend SCAD.

My friends who constantly share my work and send me opportunities. A special thanks the gals at Dreamhouse Savannah for letting me host my workshops, Babe Caves for commissioning work from me and finally to my great friend LoFire ceramics for inspiring me everyday to grown as an independent artist.
