Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Moran.
Michelle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always known I wanted to be an entrepreneur. When I was little (about 8 years old I think) I used to handmake household decorations like crocheted doilies and air freshener dolls and my aunt would sell them at her job. I guess you could say she put that entrepreneurial spirit in me.
Since then, starting a business where I could do what I love and bring joy to others is the only career path I ever followed. For a while I designed professional websites for other businesses and organizations. After that I started making natural bath and body products. Although both endeavors worked out really well, it wasn’t until I opened Tipsy Hues that I found my true passion.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. People thought I was either crazy or courageous for starting a business while being pregnant and homeschooling three older kids in the midst of a pandemic. But with daycare costs and public health concerns, I knew that was my best option.
I got the equipment and supplies I needed, packed it all in my Honda Civic and started doing mobile paint parties. Once I had enough money saved up, I found a building that would be perfect for a starter studio. I turned one room into a storage area and the other into a kid’s room.
And since all of our groups are private parties, guests are more comfortable social distancing with people they know.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I help people unwind, have fun, socialize and party, all while discovering their creative side. These days, life revolves around technology.
Parents and kids are constantly on their phones or other devices or watching TV. What I offer people is an escape, a chance to get out and enjoy themselves in a unique way that doesn’t involve screen time. It makes me glad to see people interacting with family/friends, and I love seeing the reactions when a guest came in saying they haven’t painted since the third grade, now they’ve created something they’re proud to hang on their wall. And I don’t use pre-sketched canvases. We’re painting from scratch! Many people come to my studio with expectations from previous experiences, but my guests love the hospitality and personal attention they receive at Tipsy Hues, and of course the complementary wine!
How do you think about happiness?
My family makes me happy. I come from a solid Christian home with strong family values. I have a wonderful husband who supports me in everything I do. We’ve got four amazing children, and I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world.
