Today, we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Dumas.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have worked as an Architectural Color Consultant for more than 25 years. My services include providing custom paint color palettes for interiors and exteriors of homes and businesses. For 22 years, my husband and I owned two Benjamin Moore Paint, Flooring, and Design Centers in Atlanta. We sold them in 2019 and relocated to the Lowcountry.
I started offering virtual consultations during the pandemic, which proved very popular. As a result, I now have clients in more than 30 states across the US, as well as in Canada. In addition, I continue to offer on-site appointments in Hilton Head, Savannah, Bluffton, Beaufort, and Charleston. I still travel to Atlanta regularly to see my previous clients.
Recently, I have been working on several new construction projects, helping clients with their color palettes and choosing counters, tiles, flooring, wallpaper, and other foundational items that link together the construction options to achieve their overall vision. Many of my clients include real estate agents who seek my help updating homes to get them ready for sale or helping new property owners create their dream homes with a refresh.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The pandemic has changed the way I connect with my clients. However, overcoming the initial challenges during that time has helped my business open up more opportunities to see and help clients from all over the country. Although I still miss collaborating with my stores’ designers, we stay in touch and make things work virtually.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I recently changed my Instagram handle to Rebecca Dumas Color because I focus on creating the overall color scheme for a space. Color creates the mood and feel of the home, it not only encompasses differing paint selections but also flooring stain tones, tile and stone colors, and undertones and creating an inspirational pattern color plan using wallpaper. I zero in on the color and how it relates to the space with the client’s furnishings.
When creating a plan, I try to learn about the client’s background and interests. This often becomes the starting point for creating the flow and palette throughout their home. Most people have a favorite color; mine is green, so I love incorporating shades of green into my home. I also try to add something unexpected that my clients end up loving. They usually say something like, “I never would have thought of that,” which is why they called me to help them put together a plan that they love and that will stand the test of time. Color plays a vital role in setting a home’s overall mood and feel.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Timing has been crucial for many of my endeavors. During the pandemic, I focused on color, specifically paint colors, and created a niche as an online color consultant. Many people sought to paint their interiors during the pandemic but lacked the confidence to choose the right colors.
That’s where I came in. Clients would send me pictures of their spaces, or we would have a Facetime session, then we would discuss the specifics of what they wanted to achieve, and I would send them large color swatches. We would regroup on another call to finalize the plan.
Last year, I expanded my business to include before-and-after renderings on Photoshop for exteriors. This proved helpful for many clients when contemplating painting their brick exteriors.
