Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Rabhan.
Hi Sabrina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Senior care has been a part of my life since I was a child. It not only is a job, but it is also a lifestyle. Helping those who paved the way for all of us is so humbling. There is almost nothing we go through that a senior has not experienced either personally or globally; from loss, failure, professional success, failure or pivot, a pandemic… you name it, they have seen it, lived through it, and survived it.
I grew up visiting the nursing facility my grandparents owned. They came over to the United States in the early ’50s after barely surviving the Holocaust. Their entire families were wiped out. I had an aunt and uncle I never had the pleasure of meeting or even seeing a picture of; they were shot in their home as little children in Hungary with their mother after my grandfather was arrested. My grandparents were introduced in a Displaced person camp after WWII and, after many a love letter from my grandfather, they wed. They settled in Chicago, IL.
On my grandfather’s journeys, he noticed several older folks in the same spot every day, in the same clothes, and they all seemed to be waiting. (This reminds me of Dr. Suess’ ‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go’ waiting room). He became friendly with many of them. He realized that none had anyone to assist them in any of their daily activities (read our blog at www.BuckinghamSouth.com for more info), and they went to the park to meet their children in the small window of time off they had.
My grandfather would often take these folks back to their apartments and where he saw how sad their living conditions were. He and my grandmother scraped together some funds, bought an apartment building, moved into the attic, and rented out the apartments to people who needed assistance. That began the Buckingham Care Home. (Named after the Buckingham Fountain in Chicago).
Fast forward to the present. My mother opened Buckingham South Assisted Living in Savannah, Ga in 1999; I moved back to Savannah in 2010. In 2018, my husband and I opened Buckingham At Home, offering our signature care in the comfort of your home. I absolutely love helping people with their Healthcare needs.
That can be Assisted Living, Nursing, Home Care, Rehab, post-surgical care, or even Hospice. I also love watching my mother go to great lengths to help and individualize care for everyone she cares for.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The bumps that come along with healthcare… what to do when one’s needs change, do siblings agree? What are the wishes of the client; devices associated with care (i.e. Catheter care, IV fluids, or antibiotics). We are very well versed and have much experience with these inevitable situations.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are known for our care. Our unparalleled care. We are also known as being LOCALLY owned and operated, with the owners on-premises every single day. We are very proud of all of our caregivers. We love our employees.
When a client walks through our doors, we don’t rest until we know they have their needs met, regardless if they choose us or not.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Listen. Do not assume you know how one wants to spend their golden years; we are all different, with differing needs and desires, schemas, and experiences.
