Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Langas.
Hi Shannon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Shannon Langas, and I am an illustrator, educator, and graphic designer originally from San Antonio, Texas. My love of both art and education came from the local library. I was a homeschooled military brat who often struggled to make friends, so books were my window to the world. I devoured pretty much anything I could get my hands on, from Marvel comics to my mom’s old college textbooks, but illustrated scifi and fantasy novels were always my closest companions. Reading gave me the power to see how wide the world truly was, but fiction let me dream of telling my own stories.
I taught myself drawing and design throughout middle and highschool, and was accepted to the Illustration program at SCAD in 2022. SCAD gave me the chance to hone my skills and expand upon my passions, but I wanted to give other students that same chance. Over the last few years I’ve had the opportunity to work as a personal tutor, peer mentor, and art educator through SCAD and several other institutions, and the joy that education has brought into my life can’t be overstated. As I move towards graduation, I look forward to the opportunity to continue to uplift students with the tools that they need to succeed, both in their artistic careers and in the wider world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Art was not an expected path for my life. I come from a family of engineers, scientists, and military servicemembers. I was one of a very small number of my high school friends who attended a college out of state, as specialized fine arts education in Texas is fairly limited. I feel incredibly privileged to have had the means to pursue my career in the way that I have, and increasing accessibility in the arts remains a driving force of my work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I believe in accessible design, and the marriage of traditional and digital work in the 21st century. My work as a graphic designer has given me greater insight into the way that design affects all people, every day of our lives. From soda can packaging, to highway billboards, to mobile game ads, visual communication impacts and informs every choice we make. I specialize in punchy, graphic branding with a focus on client experience and impact, and I use both traditional and digital tools to execute my clients’ vision.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always looking to support small businesses and local publications. If you’re looking for an artist who can communicate your unique visual narrative across multiple platforms, please reach out!
