Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauntia Dyson.
Hi Shauntia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sure! So, The Emerging Adult started in 2017 and was a product of a breakup. I figured if I had all of this built-up sadness, I may as well do something productive with it. I had just earned my master’s degree, and I felt like there was not a lot of information out there to help me or my fellow millennial friends to be successful in the career world. I figured I may as well share the lessons and tips that were given to me by older and trusted close friends and former supervisors. Fast forward 5 years later, and The Emerging Adult has really taken a turn for the better. Now the focus is more so on my personal journey of living as a young, single millennial navigating the ups and downs of life, love, and literally everything in between.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely been a little bumpy over these past five years! One of the main struggles was (and honestly still is) consistency in my work. I am a teacher, so as you can imagine, dealing with the stress of the job along with the other factors of life, sometimes The Emerging Adult gets pushed to the back burner, and I find myself having to push the reset button time and time again. Finances has also been a major pothole along the way, which I think any entrepreneur or content creator can attest to. I have big dreams that also involve super deep pockets, and I’m not quite there yet. I had to learn to work with what I have, use the bartering system with other creators, and make little changes here and there that will ultimately lead to the overall goal of building my communication empire!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Millennial Lifestyle Content Creator. I am the self-proclaimed voice of young, fly, and single black women, using personal anecdotes to create content about what matters most to us. I get down to the nitty-gritty about topics like sex, dating, religion, and anything else you can think of. I am most proud of myself for swallowing my fear and sharing my life with the world, even when the story doesn’t have a happy ending. Sharing intimate stories is super scary because I’m opening the door to criticism, judgment, and negativity, but I continue to speak up and show up for my girls and say the things that they think but are too afraid to say themselves. My content allows them to feel seen and heard publicly and privately. Going along for the ride in my journey helps them know that they aren’t alone.
What matters most to you?
Outside of my friends and family, my voice matters the most to me. For YEARS, I’ve felt like my voice was muted, and I had to conform to the thoughts and words of others. It wasn’t until recently that I saw the importance of sharing with others why I do the things that I do and say the things that I say. Humbly speaking, when I open my mouth, people listen, and I don’t take that lightly. Using my voice is a part of my purpose here on Earth, and I’m grateful for the chance to use it in any capacity I can!
