Community Highlights: Meet Amanda Janke of Free Range Pediatrics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Janke.

Hi Amanda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband is a pastor at May River Lutheran Church here in Bluffton. We started the church during my residency training in Savannah. After training it was natural for me to get my first job here in Bluffton, but I quickly got burned out on the fast-pace/no-time culture of the traditional medical clinic environment. I wanted time with my patients. I realized I was looking forward to those patients who I knew and who’s parents I clicked with. I quickly realized I (and I think a lot of my patients) wanted a personal experience that put the doctor patient relationship first. Thus, Free Range was born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This venture has been so fun and allowed me to flex some creative muscles I have neglected for a long time. The entire clinic space required a make-over. A lot of the early time before launch was sore muscles and long hours of painting, cleaning, and furniture moving. There’s been a lot of work with getting word out and participating with the community, but I would hardly count that as a struggle. People have been so receptive and excited about the clinic and the opportunity to take a more holistic approach with their child’s healthcare.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Free Range Pediatrics?
At Free Range Pediatrics, we do things differently on purpose. We are a direct primary care pediatric practice built for modern families—especially busy moms juggling multiple children—who want easier access, more time with their doctor, and care that actually feels personal. We are known for being accessible, responsive, and deeply invested in the families we serve.

We provide comprehensive pediatric care from newborn through adolescence, but what truly sets us apart is how we deliver that care. Families have direct access to their pediatrician through text, phone, and telemedicine. The initial newborn visit after delivery is always in-home which sets us up for relationship-based care that goes far beyond the traditional model.

While I care for children of all ages, I have a special place in my heart for first-time moms. Caring for children from birth is one of the greatest privileges in medicine—you get to watch them grow into their personalities and be part of life’s biggest milestones. Just as meaningful is supporting moms during that journey. In today’s culture, many moms feel isolated or disconnected, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be a trusted, steady presence who feels like part of their village.

Free Range Pediatrics has naturally grown into a safe haven for moms who share similar values around raising their children, and I truly believe the name plays a role in that. “Free Range” families often prioritize outdoor play, independence, and raising resilient, confident kids. There’s a shared mindset of allowing children to experience challenges and grow from them, rather than overprotecting at every turn.

I’m especially proud of this aspect of the brand because it reflects a meaningful cultural shift—one that moves away from the pressures of intensive, fear-based parenting and toward raising capable, well-adjusted children with confidence and intention.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I went to a Caribbean medical school so I lived abroad the first 2 years of medical school. I hated being away from family, but I had some of the most fun times while there. I would regularly SCUBA dive with classmates after exams and frequently go spear fishing for lion fish! We ate whatever was on the menu which included all manner of seafood, shark, and even iguana tail once!
